Thomas Havens, Professor

After 25 years at Connecticut College, 2 at Illinois, and 6 at
Berkeley, Tom Havens came to Northeastern in 1999 as chair of the
history department. He has also served as acting director of Asian
Studies. He teaches undergraduate courses on Japanese history, East
Asian cultures, and Japanese literature in translation.

His latest
book, on the avant-garde arts in Japan after World War Two, will be
published by University of Hawaii Press in 2006. His current
research focuses on the history of public parks and open spaces in
Japan and its former colonies.
