What is the language requirement for students pursuing a B.A. at Northeastern?
At the present time, students are required to complete two one-semester courses (LNx101 and LNx102) in one of the languages offered with grades of `C' or better in each. Courses in a language being used to satisfy the language requirement may not be taken pass/fail.

What course should a student register for if the student has studied a language in high school?
Students with prior experience in French, German or Spanish must take a written placement exam if they wish to enroll in a French, German or Spanish language course. Students who have experience in any of the other languages and who wish to take a course in that language must arrange for an interview placement assessment prior to enrolling in the course.

Students with prior experience or coursework who enroll in a language course without taking a placement exam may be removed from a course if they are inappropriately enrolled. The placement exam is available online for Spanish, French, and German. For all other languages, please contact the Modern Languages Department at 617-373-2234 to make an appointment. What if a student scores beyond the elementary level ( 101 and 102) on the placement test?
A student scoring above the elementary level (i.e. testing out of the 102 course) has satisfied the language requirement by testing and should contact the department's Head Advisor, Stephen Sadow via e-mail or through his office at 429A Meserve Hall, 617.373.4324, to have the language accepted.
